The end plate does two things: it holds your rear takedown pin detent and spring in place, and it gives your sling somewhere to attach. This one adds a QD socket so you can clip and unclip a sling in a second. It’s stamped from mil-spec steel and finished in manganese phosphate, the same parkerized coating used on service parts. That finish holds oil well and resists rust. It fits AR-15, M4, and M16 pattern rifles.
